Prime to Rhyme Cards

Add the most foundational phonemic awareness program available to your toolbox.

Do you have clients struggling with phonological awareness? Do they look at you blankly or make wild guesses when you work on rhyming?

Many phonological awareness programs begin with CVC rhyming, but that level is too complex for a lot of children with language impairments.

Prime to Rhyme starts with the basics — pictures of individual vowel phonemes. Once children see how their mouths make vowel sounds, they are able to sort CV words into rhyming families based on vowels they both hear and see.

From that point, you can build rhyming ability by following the small sequenced steps outlined in Prime to Rhyme.

What’s Included

  •  50 CV color picture rhyming cards in 6 rhyme families: “oo” “ee” “oh” “ay” “ah” and “ai”
  •  The CV cards can be printed both with and without the words that label the pictures.
  •  6 vowel lip shape cards for “oo” “ee” “oh” “ay” “ah” and “ai”
  •  Prime to Rhyme Word List
  •  Step by step instructions, activity ideas and associated research.

With Prime to Rhyme you can work on

  • CV rhyming
  • Auditory Memory
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Categorizing

Prime to Rhyme prepares children to understand critical phonological awareness skills. We know children need syllable awareness, and the ability to add and take away phonemes from words, but many children can’t access these skills until they get a handle on more basic skills. Although rhyming itself may not be considered a critical skill, the knowledge that it takes to generate rhymes is the same knowledge you need to manipulate phonemes. Prime to Rhyme also helps children improve their memory for sound sequences, another critical skill for both reading and articulation.
